VIVALDI

Now, I have created one website for my individual project.

Here is the link—http://students.washington.edu/yuchung/

=============================================================================================

Because the weather is like an eternal spring in Taiwan, I can’t surely discern what the differences between the four seasons. Of course, we always wear a T-shirt with a jacket or just an original shirt everyday. Simply out, we don’t need to completely change our clothing style due to the change of the season in Taiwan. When I came to United State, especially studying in Seattle, I’m so impressed by the climate changes during all the year round. There are absolutely spring, summer, fall and winter. Hence, I can enjoy all kinds of clothing style and wear the latest fashion style every season.

Seattle is in the temperate marine climate area. It weather is very mild, but it rain a lot. Therefore, Seattle is called “Rain city” because its rainfall is around 890~970 mm per year. Even if so, we can still experience the change in four seasons. The drizzle dances in spring; the sunshine smiles in summer; the breeze murmurs in autumn; the snow laughs in winter. People here like to do outdoor activities according to the climate change. We really enjoy our life in the four seasons.

Climate changes Clothing
We can image that the cute dress is under the cherry of spring, the sexy bikini is on the beach of summer, a wrap jacket is under the maple of autumn, and a scarf is in the snow of winter.

Clothing changes Emotion & Behaviors
When people wear the clothing with the different style, people would present different attitudes and emotion. Of course, people would have extremely dissimilar behaviors. For example, when you put on a fancy dress, you have to keep your elegance and gracefulness in order to avoid some improper behaviors. On the contrary, when you wear in a sporty style, you must feel more casual and relaxed.

VIVALDI : Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678 –1741) was a Venetian priest and  music composer, as well as a famous violinist. The Four Seasons, a series of four violin concertos, are his best known works and highly popular Baroque music pieces.

★  Interviews ( I am collecting their photos in order to produce some videos or slideshow to tell my story. Also if i could, i would createsimple website for this project. Here is a online album that shows their photos about seasonal clothing.)

1. Stephanie

Stephanie is a 22-year-old pretty girl. She graduated from the University of Washington in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts double majoring in Communication and Political Science. Now she is studying Digital Media program atUniversity of Washington and working in the human resources department.

Not only does Stephanie like everything about beauty and fashion, but also she wants to her best and appropriate appearance to other people whether at work or school.  She indicates that she notices fashion trends via what people are wearing in entertainment media (magazines, TV, online) e.g. celebrities and through she environment at work and school.  Another indicator is stores via what they are selling online, in mail catalogs or physical store locations. She said” Overall fashion and change is fun.  It is like an art that changes with its surroundings and one’s mood.  Fashion portrays an image, most of the time the image is related to practicality and being covered for the ever-changing weather and occasion, the fun part is adding a personal touch.

Her style is created by what looks good for my body type combined with practicality for the environment such as the occasion (e.g. professional, dressy, casual, sporty, trendy, classic etc.) and the weather (e.g. snow, rain, hot, cold). She thinks that the weather in Seattle is not very distinguishable in a different season, so seasonal clothing is natural and seamless like the change in seasons.  In Seattle the weather is not extreme which means only clothing material (e.g. wool, cotton, thick, vs. thin) and layers (e.g. jacket, sweater/shirt or shoes) change. Stephanie believes that the seasons affect her mood and behavior by changing the weather which affects activities and natural colors.

Fall & Winter = cold, rain and possible snow.

  • Activities = skiing, inner-tubing, indoor holiday parties (Halloween, Christmas, New Years, Valentines).
  • Clothes = heavy coats, gloves, scarves, sweaters, boots.
  • Textures/Fabric = thick, wool, velvet.
  • Colors = deep, dark,

Spring & Summer = warm, rain and possible cloud-free days.

  • Activities = hiking, biking, swimming, boating, outdoor potlucks and barbeque parties (Easter, Mothers & Fathers Day, 4th of July).
  • Clothes = light rain jacket, t-shirts, skirts, sun-dresses, sandals
  • Textures/Fabric = thin, cotton, linen, silk.
  • Colors = pastel, light,

2. Claire

(I will produce this video with some content in parts of her interview.)

Claire Yeh is studying ESL program in Bellevue community college. She is 23-year-old Taiwanese. She loves Seattle very much because its weather is mild and unlike the humid and hot weather in Taiwan.

Because she likes to go shopping online and she is one of the best yahoo shopping sellers in Taiwan, she has to understand any latest clothing information and fashion trend. Sometimes, Claire used to collecting all kinds of information or news about clothing and other accessories from different sources. Among these sources, she prefers to read Japanese fashion magazines and fashion websites; she usually watches TV shows to get some idea about the current trend in clothing.

Her clothing style always looks casual, such as jeans and tees. Because of its temperature difference may be a little big during spring, she always adds a thin outwear to keep warm after evening. In summer, the weather is so hot that I like to wear tank or camis to let myself feel more comfortable. Also, she likes to wear sunglasses to resist the burning hot sunshine. In autumn, the weather begins to become cool and she likes to wear some clothes that can keep people warm. In winter, she likes to wear a wool hat and the cool scarf that can prevent my ear and my face from coldness. In addition, Claire will want to wear boots that can make her style unique and stylish.

3. Belle

Belle Huang is a full-time student in Master of Communication in Digital Media at University of Washington. She is form Taichung, a beautiful city in Taiwan.

Appropriation is her best principle for clothing. The second one is to keep warm. In spring, light and soft color will make me feel the blossoming atmosphere; in summer, shining color will suitable to the sharp color in the natural environment. It is not fun to get a sun burn, thus she always bring a small overall to protect herself. Besides, in autumn, she always wears in darker colors like brown, purple or gray because she thinks autumn is a season of relaxing and glory. In winter, she mainly wears in black because the weather is usually cloudy or ever worse. But she will choose something furry since it looks comfortable and warm.

During our interview, Belle said “Weather will be the main factor to affect me. I am pretty emotional. The degree, sunshine or rainfall will always lead me different feelings. The color changing in nature will also change my selection of color on clothing. Moreover, Fashion news on TV, website, newspaper, or magazine will be her source of fashion. Also friends’ suggestion or wearing styles will give a good reference to Belle.

Spring Colorful, keep warm, soft, slim and graceful
Summer Shining, refreshing, cool, sun protection
Autumn Gray, brown, layers
Winter Mainly black, warm, heavy

Here is Belle’s fashion show with her interview.

Interesting idea about how one change affects another. Seasons change clothing which changes mood? Highlighting clothing as an expressive device which could play a part in such things as Seasonal Affective Disorder, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything close to that idea before and VERY original. Something I don’t think many of us think of. Do we communicate to each other differently depending on our clothing expressions?

By that token, what are we communicating when we show less skin or more? If you could find any research on non-verbal communication as it relates to clothing, then relate THAT to the style of people’s clothing in Seattle, I think it’d be very interesting. People say Seattle is more casual, that we don’t tend to dress up very often and that we don’t have that much of a sense of edgy style. What does that communicate about us?
